today a man stopped me at a payphone and he told me about how he was being evicted. he said that he had been laid off and was 51 days late on his rent payment. he also said he had been recently hired at the rainforest cafe and would be getting paid on the 5th of may. he couldn't believe that his landlord, after seeing his newhire papers, was still carrying on with the eviction.

we talked for ten minutes and he went on to tell me that he was getting in touch with his son's mother in hopes that she would let him stay there while he finds a new place to live. i told him that i hoped everything would work out for him and that he would find himself a new home.

what really surprised me is that i caught myself in a moment of honesty. no fake sympathy, no pseudoempathy, just pure intentions and good will being thrown at someone. it felt like he could be any of us, maybe not today, but maybe soon. something hits me with the certainty that everyone should have a home. we should all have a place to sleep in and i hope he finds his new one with great ease.

hey man from the payphone, i'm throwing pennies into the karma pool and they have your name written on them.
